Gadgetism.org > The year of Gaming Systems

[the construct :: weblog] 2005 has been a year of many things so far. Mac OSX Tiger, the High Def Revolution, and now onto console gaming. It seems like 2005 was the year for new things as technology gets better and better. For example, the three latest consoles announced all have wireless controllers.

[Breaking Windows 2.0 - Rants & Raves by Ken Edwards & Matt Paprocki] E3: Microsoft's Pre-Show Conference: More features are discussed, including video chat and an online music service. It can connect to other items like the I-Pod and digital cameras, including the competition's products. It also features a Progressive scan DVD player without a separate remote. This all connects to a media center PC and they showcase aTerminator 2 film clip, music, and an NFL game, all while browsing with the console, all while connected to Live in Hi-Def.

[Computer Alchemy] Engadget Joystiq’s live coverage of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 E3 event: While we’re waiting to get this show on the road, here’s a quick recap of what’s gone down. Today’sSony PS3 unveiling has opened up a world of questionsregarding how Microsoft expects to maintain a competitive edge against a system that will supposedly have more thandouble the raw processing power, a next-gen media drive (Blu-ray, in this case), two-generation backwardscompatibility, and even support for 1080p hi-def. We also still don’t know how much the Xbox 360 is going to cost, anexact release date, what kinds of configurations it will have, and, of course the big question: will it have backwardscompatibility?

[Something or Nothing] Xbox 360, and odd dreams...: I had a weird dream. I dremt that Armaan and I (and other random people, it was a minivan) were driing Bill Gates around and talking with him. I don't really remember much of it, only that he had an annoying laugh and when asked about Mod Chips he said that the Xbox 360 would be impossible to mod because the filesystem wouldn't support it....

[SquareBrain.Net] I want one!: Couple that with XBox Live (the only console multiplayer environment to actually get it right) and you have, in your hands, the Ultimate Gaming Machine. I don’t own an XBox, but if they make the XBox 360 backwards-compatible, I know what my next purchase is going to be.

Today @ PC World: As for the movie, even knowing how it must end, I deem it the best instalment of the three-film prequel to the original Star Wars Trilogy of the late 1970s and '80s. Hayden Christensen, recovering from a so-so turn in Episode II--Attack of the Clones, is at least intermittently compelling as he morphs from the arrogant but well-meaning Anakin Skywalker into the evil Darth Vader; he becomes a worthy foil to the always excellent Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobe. Production values are, as usual, top notch--although (spoiler alert!) I did start to weary of endless duels involving a rainbow of light-sabre hues and a bouncing Yoda.

jim's: The article also brought up the issue about Widgets memory usage. Each Widget will require certain amount of memory and when activated, meaning pulled onto Dashboard, the amount won’t differ even if the Widgets are not on active use (not at the forefront of your desktop). One way to prevent this is not to activate too many Widgets, especially those that requires constant net connections or requires constant updating. Another is to halt all Widget processes by temporary killing the Dock by using the Activity Monitor ( located at /Applications/Utilities and quiting the Dock process.
