[Million Dollar Journey] Radically Frugal | Million Dollar Journey: We live in a very expensive housing market (Vancouver), and have chosen to live in a co-op apartment that’s within walking distance of my husband’s office rather than buy a house in one of the outer suburbs, which would mean less family time, and much more money spent on a second vehicle or transit passes.
[Nifty-Stuff.com] Auto Coop Door Prototype: This was just for fun. As long as I had all these chain reactions going on, I decided to add one more. Our back door sits parallel to this auto coop door. We’re far enough out that we’d have to walk outside of the house about 150 feet to see if the door successfully closed. I added a piece of wood with a pre-drilled hole and a screw as a swivel point. When the door is up, the block of wood with a reflector attached, points toward our door. A quick shot with a flashlight shows bright red reflection and that the door is still open. Once the door falls, so does the block of wood and reflector. At that point the reflector is lying down and can’t be seen by our flashlight which means the door has successfully and completely closed!
[PowellsBooks.BLOG] Powell's Books - PowellsBooks.BLOG - An Eight-Bit Version of ...: Don't text while driving!" I was the guy who took "Shake Your Tambourine," an old New Orleans R&B hit, and turned it into his damn ring tone. And I was the guy whose laptop got stolen, leaving him wandering around in a daze, unsure of what to do with himself, saying repeatedly, "My whole life was on there!" while secretly I was thinking: "Sweet, now I can get a Mac so that I'll finally fit in down at the coffee shop!"
[Motorcycle.Com News Feed] 2008 Literbike Shootout: ZX-10R vs CBR1000RR vs GSX-R1000 vs YZF ...: Although unchanged mechanically, the R1 has some high-tech gadgetry the others dont, such as the throttle-by-wire and variable-length intake trumpets it gained last year. A slipper clutch was also added to the YZFs standard equipment list in 07.
[Fearless Gearless - Blood, sweat and tears, but no extra gears!] Fixies, urban cool. | Fearless Gearless: Speaking of trendy, I embody the term, as yesterday I went for groceries at the local coop on my Masi Fixie and filled my backpack full to the brim with about 25lbs of organic produce, then sat outside reading the Alibi and sipping on some Pom white organic tea. WOAW!
[Elite - The Dark Wheel] Space Traders Flight Training Manual Part 3 Interplanetary travel ...: Additionally, most Thargoid battle ships carry several small, remote- controlled “thargons”, killer-craft each equipped with a single, but highly advanced, pulse-laser. The Galactic Navy are developing their own deep- space RemCraft, and pay a large bounty for any thargon craft that are brought to them.
[MetaFilter] 12-pound folding bicycle | MetaFilter: What I especially like about the concept is if things get too rough it looks really simple to just scoot the bike out from under you and roll the thing, and if you have to carry it, well, it's really light. I think a paved cyclocross event for these bikes would be a blast -- you'd set up the course in a public park or campus with lots of stairs, maybe route it through a few buildings or something -- hell, maybe even throw in some rock climbing.
[PopMatters: Crazed by the Music] Chicago is heart, brain center of Obama campaign < PopWire ...: Rospars, who worked for Howard Dean’s Internet operation in the last presidential election, said that virtually every part of his team’s efforts is designed to convert online gadgetry to actual votes. “For all the blog posts,”
[Finland for Thought] Finland for Thought » Finns wealthier than thought? | Politics ...: One evergreen is the one about finns driving around in OLDER cars (that is the mean-age of cars in Finland is older), and that the presumed (who knows how much car-dealers, and much more important car-manufacturers would take advantage of such a situation) lowering of prices resulting from lowering of the car-tax would mean more SAFETY (that’s what they always use as an argument when this “age of cars”-argument is used), due to more modern cars being taken into use (have to admit that the two year old car wh had proved worthy of its 5-stars, when my wife - this is the truth, it wasn’t me - rammed the car into one of these fences you have between lanes on the motorway, doing 120 km/h).
[AV Club] TV Spies & Secret Agents | TV | A.V. Club: Espionage has been the subject of fiction at least as far back as 1821, when James Fenimore Cooper penned the novel The Spy, though the genre really took off at the dawn of the 20th century, when books like Rudyard Kiplings Kim, Robert Erskine Childers The Riddle Of The Sands, and Joseph Conrads The Secret Agent”along with scattered Arthur Conan Doyle stories about Sherlock Holmes”popularized the idea of men who courted danger to serve a noble cause. Spies and secret agents became staples of the movies right from the start”particularly in the films of German genre-master Fritz Lang”and sparked something of a phenomenon in the early 60s, when the Ian Fleming pulp hero James Bond hit the big screen.
[Feral Scholar] Feral Scholar » Blog Archive » Battlespace: “Although the news media will undoubtedly focus on the sci-fi gadgetry involved - thermobaric bombs, microwave weapons, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), PackBot robots, Stryker fighting vehicles, and so on - the truly radical innovations (or so the war wonks claim) will be in the organization and, indeed, the very concept of the war.
[The Bing Blog] Enter as many times as you like! - The Bing Blog: Well, I think I should win your highly efficient old but perfectly functional relic Ipod because I am a NYC train traveler and each morning I am crowded by offensively smelly people-breathe or body- and without a reliable listening device, I am forced to concentrate on the odor or even listen to the school aged kids discuss teeny bopper school drama which makes me slightly jealous that they are in a stage of easy life while I am on my way to a more responsible setting. This is my story and I am definitely going to stick with it.
[The Fluent Self] An itty-bitty personal ad.: I am still asking for huge, profound change in my life, but instead of making my typical (vague yet sweeping) request and then hoping someone else will notice and give it to me, I am identifying and asking for what I want in small increments, one itty-bitty, specific and heartfelt request at a time. I know that they’re all adding up to one big juicy loving personal ad for my life that I’m not quite (but am almost) courageous enough to see in its entirety.
