Orlando Yanks Free WiFi

[philly] I never knew, but apparently the city of Orlando, FL had a free WiFi system installed downtown. But on Sunday, Father's Day, they cut it off after seventeen months.

Wireless - wireless.engadget.com: Not like we were planning on visiting anytime soon or anything, but we are so not digging this: the city of Orlando has decided to shut down the free WiFi network they had installed downtown. Hardly anyone was actually using it (they were getting about 27 users a day, which was far fewer than they’d expected), and apparently it was getting tougher and tougher for them to justify spending $1,800 a month it cost to maintain the network for a service that so few people were taking advantage of. http://weblogs.ilg.com [Weblogs.ilg.com] Dustin's Blog: The HTC Universal is floating around Teched in an unbranded device (black with HTC logo) is very nice, and will be about the same form factor as the current Siemens SX66/XDA III class devices, but with rotatable screen and keyboard in a fashion much like the old HPC/Nokia Communicator devices. Obviously, the catch here is that it will be doubtful that any US carrier would pick this device up at least in 2005 considering that our German friends at T-Mobile Germany, and Orange will have first dibs on this thing in Europe.
