*michael parekh on IT*[*michael parekh on IT*] First, this article in New Scientist (via JKontherun), describes a new, virtual computer architecture from IBM research Labs, called the SoulPad that can store a complete, self-contained user computing environment including operating system, favorite applications and user data, on any type of portable storage device ranging from USB sticks to devices with hard drives like MP3 players and cellphones. As the article puts it:

Roland Piquepaille's Technology Trends: Thanks to researchers from IBM, it is now possible to use the SoulPad system, a portable device carrying a stack of software. The host PC, which can be of any variety, "boots an auto-configuring operating system (Knoppix) from the SoulPad, starts a virtual machine monitor, and resumes a suspended virtual machine that has the user's entire personal computing environment." Now, the IBM team is thinking to use cell phones as well to carry the SoulPad system as soon as they have enough disk storage capacity. (via Cosmos)

[Gadgets-weblog.com] The Gadgets Weblog - Talk of Tech Tools and Toys - Biometric ...: The RAW image format (used by higher end cameras to capture photographic images in a loss-less format unlike jpeg),  isn't an open format as such -  what standards there are are more a matter of convention.  As such, camera companies can interpret RAW any way they like, and use their own unique dialects of it.  This may mean that you can only open your RAW images with their application, rather than your tool of choice.  For now, this isn't a problem - but what about some time in the future, when they stop supporting that 5 year old RAW dialect they created, or they go out of business, or RAW is replaced by something better.
