Gadgetism.org > Marginal Revolution: *You are Not a Gadget*
[Marginal Revolution] Always, the search for a coherent, singular, totalizing force which spawns a mass, and defies dissent/change. It should be clear, by now, that no such coherence exists in the world at large: no matter what insights it may garner, the countercultural critique is long discredited, and lanier should stick to playing his pan flutes for his patchouli scented hive.

[Semper Fi] Semper Fi - YOU ARE NOT A GADGET by Jaron Lanier: PRAISE FOR YOU ARE NOT A GADGET “In this sane and spirited critique of Internet dogma, Jaron Lanier also delivers a timely defense of the value of the individual human being.” ”Nicholas Carr, author of Does IT Matter? and The Big Switch “Jaron Laniers long awaited book is fabulous”I couldnt put it down.
[Full Comment] Michael Agger: The geek freaks - Full Comment: He does propose a solution to the difficulty of how to compensate artists, artisans and programmers in a digital era: a content database that would be run by some kind of government organization: “We should effectively keep only one copy of each cultural expression ” as with a book or song ” and pay the author of that expression a small, affordable amount whenever its accessed.” Again, not a bad concept, but a platonic idea that sounds great in theory.
[Guardian Unlimited: Technology] Jaron Lanier on the stupidity of the hive mind | Technology ...: It's not hard to see why the fallacy of collectivism has become so popular in big organizations: If the principle is correct, then individuals should not be required to take on risks or responsibilities. We live in times of tremendous uncertainties coupled with infinite liability phobia, and we must function within institutions that are loyal to no executive, much less to any lower level member.
[Publishers Weekly - Trends In Books News] Nonfiction Reviews: 9/28/2009 - 9/28/2009 - Publishers Weekly: None of the book's insights are revelatory—for example, Obama's poise and calm under pressure have been fodder for journalists and talking heads since the primaries began—but supporters are likely to enjoy the book's concision and fresh approach to familiar material. (Dec.)
[digiphile] George Washington's Rules for Social Media « digiphile: Read no Letters, Books, or Papers in Company but when there is a Necessity for the doing of it you must ask leave: come not near the Books or Writings of Another so as to read them unless desired or give your opinion of them unasked also look not nigh when another is writing a Letter.
[Geoff Arnold] The truth about Linux » Geoff Arnold: it’s providing a reliable, highly performant service that uses that software, which takes a lot more than the code itself to do.) If you tell me that you’re building a great new semi-proprietary platform (e.g., Facebook) and that as a matter of being more creative you’re not running on top of an existing open-source platform, I’ll scratch my head there too.
[WBUR and NPR - On Point with Tom Ashbrook] Azadeh Moaveni on Modern Iran | WBUR and NPR - On Point with Tom ...: last week, and loved it. I have always enjoyed reading about Iran/Persia, and her piece in the NYTimes Sunday magazine led me to her book.
[things magazine] August - things magazine: an online journal about objects and meanings: Transfer, a NY-based architecture weblog, links to the incredible aerial photography of Oscar Ruiz, a helicopter pilot above Mexico City. The suburbs are especially breathtaking, and not in a good way.
[WBUR and NPR - On Point with Tom Ashbrook] Can Bloggers Save Journalism? | WBUR and NPR - On Point with Tom ...: As a 6 or 7 year veteran reader of Sullivan I can honestly say this is the most one-sided he has been since the build-up of the Iraq War (which he supported). His pro-Kerry blogging in the ‘04 campaign was much more thoughtful than this worship/kill style he has taken up with Obama/McCain(HRC) ‘08.
[Crooked Timber] GMU sued for Zotero ” Crooked Timber: But I’ve been thinking there’s a subtle but critically important problem with that answer, in that Wikipedia has a very dangerous tendency to draw attention from experts and funnel it into itself (Jaron Lanier touched on this in his critique). So the standard answer is too facile, and I’ve been trying to come up with a good way of explaining why that’s so.
[WBUR and NPR - On Point with Tom Ashbrook] A High-Stakes Debate | WBUR and NPR - On Point with Tom Ashbrook: Those (Palin and Hannity and the shadowy bloggers) who incite their audiences to think that Obama is some sort of pal of terrorists, must be condemned for this dangerous behavior. All decent people are going to be very upset if some hyped-up nutjob is incited to make a physical attack on Obama.
