[Oceanside, Nevada :: Main Page] I have tried, I really have, to convince the people I know and love of the magic that is RSS. Magic that can only truly be experienced with an RSS reader. And there are a lot of RSS readers out there. Up until yesterday my hands down favorite was Newsfire. Then I downloaded the 2.0 version of NetNewsWire. Wow. Seems like every few minutes I'm saying "hey, that's cool." And it is, really...

[Acetylene.net] RSS and Podcasts: (and Atom) feeds as well as Podcasts, so there’s no need to run separate clients for the two types of content. I do have a few complaints: there’s no way I could find to tell it to download, for example, only the most recent file from a feed, or only podcasts uploaded in the past week—options that are particularly useful when adding a new feed to the subscription list. And I’d really like to see NetNewsWire include PoddumFeeder’s option to automatically remove already-heard podcasts from the iTunes library (I’m planning on writing an AppleScript to handle this, but I shouldn’t have to). Overall, though, I found it to be exactly the sort of robust, stable, feature-packed software I’ve become accustomed to since switching to Mac a year and a half ago.

[iLife by Blake] NetNewsWire 2.0: loving podcast/enclosure handling: I don't have time for a ton of content so I pick and choose. For a while I was trying out "iPodder X" but got tired of yet another app to deal with RSS and podcasts. Thankfully my $39 license for NNW is paying off with these new features. For anyone on OSX and not wanting or needing a web-centric service (à la Bloglines), NNW is the way to go.

[Radio Clash Mash Up Podcast - a weekly podcast of mixes, mash-ups, and more!] EgoReFlogging: Maximum PC: I think I'm right - logs are meant for websites not Podcasts; most log tools I guess count a different visitor each time the same iPodder accesses the feed as it's more than 10 or 20 minutes and that's longer than most people access one page so it thinks it's someone else. If I buy a nice shiny new log tool it'll tell me 'authenticated users' - ie. IP addresses and that'd be more useful.

http://myipodblog.blogspot.com [my iPod blog] My Podcasting Story: Getting Started as a Listener, Applications for Jaguar: Well, what I've found to be the best RSS aggregator out there, NetNewsWire from Ranchero Software, has released a new beta of version 2.0, which includes support for downloading enclosures, and it runs great on my OS X 10.2.8 system. After subscribing to a few podcast feeds (I chose the above mentioned BoardGameGeek feed, Adam Curry's Daily Source Code, and The Laporte Report), I let NetNewsWire do its thing--it downloaded a few recent mp3s of shows, created playlists in iTunes for them, and transferred them into iTunes (in the NNW preferences, I had all the mp3s put into playlists named after their feeds, and set the genre field on all of them to "Podcast"). I created a Smart Playlist to dig out all files with the Podcast genre with a playcount of 0--that way, I have a list of the ones I haven't yet heard, ready to drag onto the shuffle, and NetNewsWire will happily chug along in the background looking for new episodes. I chose the playcount restriction because the iPod shuffle updates the playcount without updating the Last Played field.

[Blog.deeje.tv] deeje.com/musings: Feature Request - Podcasts should expire like ...: Now I'd like to see NNW (et al) expire podcast content... that is, when the RSS item that contains the podcast drops out of my news aggregator, the podcast file would also be deleted from iTunes and my file system. In this way, I don't need to worry about an ever-rising flood of podcast content in my iTunes/iPod. If I like a particular piece of podcast content, I can always flag the corresponding RSS item so that it doesn't disappear.

Rohdesign.comhttp://www.rohdesign.com [Rohdesign.com] Rohdesign Weblog: Podcasting: Taken a step further, Podcasting displays an RSS selection of these home-brewed audio “shows” like an RSS aggregator would — so you listen to audio entries rather than reading them, as is the case with textual weblog entries. Podcasting makes use of an 'enclosures' feature present in RSS 2.0 to achieve this. For current news on what's happening in the Podcasting world, check out iPodder.org.

43folders.com[43folders.com] 43 Folders: Custom feed refreshing in NetNewsWire: I'm using NNW lite, and could do with getting a full version because I really miss the ability to individually schedule refreshes - I read about 50 RSS feeds daily. On Windows SharpReader is just about the ultimate in RSS readers, and it's free. Compared to SharpReader most other programs are lacking, but NNW gets really close. It would be nice if you could open pages in the reading pane, and for some reason NNW doesn't pull in Craigslist items - I have to go into Safari to read the listings, but other than that I like the program.

[Marcn.blurty.com] marc's non-blog...: In taking the long-view, Rebecca invites us to contemplate the possibilities of a world where the (currently online) population has unprecedented access to information, to collaboration, and the ability to have an impact far beyond any geographical ”˜limitations’, and that’s a future that excites me no end, but the key, of course, is to not lose sight of potential pitfalls, to not view the network, blogging, etc. as some rarified, high-preiest’s temple, or the magic pixie dust for every occasion, but as what they are, tools and expressions of our basic needs for communication, and community -- these eventual changes will come, not because of ”˜blogging’, that’s just one of many first steps along this long path.
