[Freckled Citizen] I had the fancy French one and when I was in cooking school they pointed out the $20 Japanese mandoline. FYI: they too pooh-poohed the French one.

I have a couple of Microplanes, which are handy but not essential, and a £1 spud peeler from Morrisons that has lasted 15 years and is still the best one I've used.
