Gadgetism.org > Apple Switching to Intel CPUs

[Amuse-O-Tron] Holy cow, those wild rumors about Intel inside Macs have come true. I’m not sure what to think about this move, except that I’m not looking forward to another transition just when it seemed like things had settled down after the transition from OS 9 to X.

Moves like these in the past received deserved ridicule from Mac and PC partisans alike and legal reprisals from Apple. It seemed odd that the Tulip E-go and the Intel/AOpen "Pandora" bitty box didn't get immediate legal reprisals from Apple. Perhaps we know the reason why now.

[LIKE YOU REALLY CARE] Apple to Use Intel Microprocessors Beginning in 2006: Now that one will compare the power of Macs one-to-one with PCs, the only thing left for the trolls to bash is OS X, and frankly, they won't have much to argue against. This choice is not bad for Apple or consumers; it's actually fantastic for Apple and consumers. Fan boys, bitch all you want. We'll still get powerful computers running our favorite operating system.

[Cult of the Mike] Macintel: The majority of the new consumers will most likely be blind to the fact that the Macintel is coming, and will continue to switch away as nothing happened. But most of the current users, the geeks of the Mac world, are defiantly going to hold off on a purchase until we start to see the Macintels coming into play. I know that personally, I have just advised all family members, a few of which were about to click the “buy” button, to wait for the new Macintels to come out. It’s more and more people doing this that will kill Apple in this time of test.

http://www.tuaw.com [Tuaw.com] The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW): Looks like there's more evidence for the long-lived rumor of there being a tablet Mac on the horizon. The Mac Observer has the scoop (although I originally spotted it on fscklog and while I was reading that, Joey wrote in with a tip pointing to the /. coverage) on a new Apple patent: "Apple Computer was granted a patent for an enigmatically titled 'Electronic device' Tuesday, May 10th, 2005. Illustrations for the device clearly indicate it to be a tablet-style Macintosh, and patent filings specifically compare it to the 'HP Compaq Tablet PC' and several other tablet machines.

http://www.tuaw.com [Tuaw.com] The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW): Well boys and girls, we all know the big rumor of the day is that Apple is looking to ditch IBM and cozy up with Intel to start producing chips for Macs across the line. Let's take a look at how people across my NetNewsWire subscriptions are reacting to this:

http://www.tuaw.com [Tuaw.com] The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW): Why is it improbable you ask? The fact that all software that currently runs on Macs using the PowerPC chip architecture would need to be recompiled to run on Intel chips. No existing software would be able to run on the Intel Mac, and that isn't a good thing. Using WWDC to announce the move a year or so in advance to developers would give them plenty of time to get their software up and running on the new Intel Macs, but John points out who would buy a PowerPC Mac during that year?

[Blogs.siliconvalley.com] Good Morning Silicon Valley: Looks like Intel CEO Paul Otellini will soon be able to, in good conscience, buy the Mac he's long dreamed of (see "Sure, I could get a Mac, but the time I spend with my daughter removing spyware is very precious").  Apple is expected to announce today that it will use Intel chips in its computers beginning next year, ending a longstanding relationship with IBM. During his keynote speech at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference today, Apple CEO Steve Jobs will reportedly announce a two-year transition plan to Intel-based Macs that will see the company shipping low-end machines, like the Mac Mini, in mid-2006 and their higher-end brethren in mid-2007. Rumored for ages now (see "For the x86th time, no way"), the move, should it prove true (and it seems it will) is a major shift in strategy for Apple -- one certain to test the loyalty of Apple developers (an architecture shift would require the re-release of all Mac software recompiled for the new chip) and the Mac faithful,  and perhaps even spawn a crowd of clone manufacturers.

Theappleblog.comhttp://www.theappleblog.com [Theappleblog.com] The Apple Blog: To much of the general public, a computer is an enigmatic box, a semi-magical creation which is simultaneously a portal to a half decent encyclopaedia, countless reams of porn and a lot of free music, a free messaging service and a good way to send long, rambling letters to people you don’t want to see face-to-face, a games console that lacks the convenience and controllers of real consoles but sometimes makes up with better graphics, and maybe a half decent typewriter. Whether the processor within is a PowerPC or something descended from Intel’s cruellest mistake (the x86; ask anyone who programmes it low level), whether the operating system is Windows XP Home, Mac OS X or Linux 2.6, most people don’t care as long as it does what it does. To most people, Macs are just prettier. “What?
